INDIAN MEDICAL COUNCIL (AMENDMENT) BILL , 2018

LOK SABHA PASSED INDIAN MEDICAL COUNCIL (AMENDMENT) BILL TO SUPERSEDE MEDICAL COUNCIL OF INDIA.


      Lok Sabha on monday passed the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill to facilitate a panel of eminent personalities which includes directors from AIIMS, Delhi and PGI, Chandigarh to run the scam-tainted Medical Council of India (MCI), so that medical education can be regulated in the best manner.


As per the direction of supreme court in may 2016 the Government of India has set up an Oversight Committee with the authority to oversee all statutory functions of MCI till the new Legislation comes in to force.


In 2017, another oversight committee was setup with the approval of the supreme court after expiration of the first panel term. The Second Oversight committee was chaired by Dr V K Paul and eminent personalities from AIIMS, Delhi PGI Chandigarh and NIMHANS.


Many members of the MCI have been accused of taking huge bribes to fast track the Accreditation of Medical colleges, which effected the credibility and efficiency of MCI

Honourable Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, while speaking on the bill said that he suggested that government was forced to come up with the bill as the Oversight Committee formed by the government on the direction of Supreme Court resigned and the MCI could not function. so, the bill was passed in Lok Sabha to allow a panel of eminent Professionals to run the scam-tainted MCI with proper regulation in the best manner and this Board Of Governors ( BOG ) will continue till a new council is constituted.

Honorable Minister said a separate bill to replace " Medical Council Of India " with " National Medical Commission " is pending in parliament.
